Thank your Teachers…..Full day Kindergarten in a Childcare Environment

This has been an interesting experiment. Parents have demanded daycare, but not full day kindergarten. There is a misunderstanding that only teachers can teach children in school. Critics say full day kindergarten was rushed into place before it was researched. I agree. Unless you understand the differences between kindergarten in a childcare facility and kindergarten within the school, you miss the point.

Kindergarten children in daycare need play time, snack time, circle time, good food, rest periods, a rich environment, with language, discipline, structure and routines. They need a caregiver that understands that play is learning and that discipline and structure have its place. They need open concept learning with a teacher that is able to integrate academic teachings according to the individual learning abilities of the child. Proper teaching and learning cannot take place in a classroom of 25-30 children. Bottom line is teachers need to empower kids to learn in a properly facilitated environment which enriches learning in all areas of development.

Teachers facilitating Kindergarten learning in a childcare setting have an understanding of sociology, psychology and an understanding of the key experiences in Early Childhood. We need caregivers who can manage a child in daycare who are trained, responsible and understand ages and stages; caregivers who know the questions to elicit thinking skills. Young children should not be in an environment that requires attention to tasks beyond what is developmentally appropriate; rather the environment needs to work in accordance to their abilities with realistic challenges. Perhaps we need to revisit social/emotional and cognitive philosophy’s from Piaget – to benefit the development of the whole child.

We need working parents to be able to find childcare providers who can tie in all the learning aspects which are facilitated at a speed in which the learner is able to handle them.

I am not in favour of full day kindergarten. The student teacher ratio alone supports those with advance skills, frustrates those who need lower ratios, more individual attention and key experiences that meet their individual needs.

Having a nanny in the home can be very convenient for some, however, there are also disadvantages to having a nanny watch your children in the home. Here are some for your consideration.

Lack of social interaction – As children grow older it becomes important for them to interact with other children. This socialization prepares them for school. Without it, they may have a more difficult time adjusting.

Bored kids – Since the kids are home all the time there is more of a chance they will become bored with the same routines. Unless your nanny is unusually creative and resourceful it may be difficult for her to keep the kids adequately entertained day after day.

Wear and tear on the home – There will be constant activity in a home with a nanny and the children there all day. This will add more to the housekeeping chores than if the children were being cared for elsewhere.

Additional costs – Hiring a nanny will generally cost more than putting your child in a day care center. Along with her salary, you will need to pay nanny taxes, possibly transportation costs and extra insurance costs for workers comp and added liability coverage.

Additional meals – Having a nanny means you will need to have additional groceries on hand for meals, both for the nanny and the children. This means extra meal planning and grocery costs.

Less privacy – Privacy issues can arise with a nanny. Constantly having another person in the house can get to be stressful if it impacts your privacy. Personal documents and information you might normal feel free to leave in the open might need to be handled with more care.

Less cooperative kids – Kids can become unruly just because they feel so comfortable on their own turf. When they are in the comfort of their own home sometimes they feel as if they can challenge the authority of outsiders. This can cause discipline problems for the nanny.

Preschool education – Your toddler will miss out on many preschool activities and the education a preschool provides by staying home all the time with a nanny. This might also affect your child’s ability to easily socialize with other children when it comes time to enter school. Group activities with other preschoolers teach little ones how to cooperate and share with one another.

Jealousy – The green eyed monster can come most unexpectedly to mothers when they realize their little one seems to be more attached to the nanny than Mom. Even though it may not be the case, it can certainly seem that way since the child is spending hours with the nanny instead of Mom.

Manipulation – Kids might feel like they can manipulate situations to their advantage by playing Mom against the nanny. Kids are pretty smart when it comes to knowing how to control things in order to get what they want.

Knowing the disadvantages of having a nanny in the home before you take that plunge can help you decide whether you want to brave those waters or not. Having a nanny may be a convenience for some parents and their busy schedules, but it does come with some costs in other areas.

First of all, all children are biters. It’s how they explore their world. However, what we want to look at is why some children will bite you or other children and some don’t. At one time or another nearly every child will bite another child. It’s just part of growing up. It’s up to you to determine the right course of action to make sure that your child doesn’t become a habitual biter. Check out 10 reasons kids become biters.

Frustration: The biggest reason a child bites is because they are frustrated with something. They are unable to determine another way to react to a situation so they lash out in the natural way of biting. As a parent, try to determine what it is that is frustrating your child and help them find other ways to deal with their frustrations. Teach them how to come to you and say that they are frustrated. If they are non-verbal teach them the sign language for frustrated. You can either look it up on the Internet or you can just make up something that works for you.

Anger: Another big reason for biting is out of anger. Maybe another child has taken the toy they were playing with or maybe they are playing with a toy that your child wants, but doesn’t want to wait for it so they bite. Teaching your child how to ask a child to share a toy might help. However, at young ages this might not be possible so it might be good to make sure there are several of the most popular toys during playtime.

Teething: We think of this as something only babies do, but it often goes into the toddler years. The child’s gums are hurting and it feels better when they bite or chew on something. This is an easy one to fix. Put a numbing agent on their gums or give them something appropriate to chew on.

Seeking attention: Sometimes a child is just trying to get more attention and negative attention is better than no attention. The best way to nip this in the bud is to make sure that when the child bites to firmly correct them and then ignore them and shower attention on the child who they bit. They will figure out that they aren’t going to get any attention when they bite and they will stop.

Feeling threatened: If the child feels threatened they will react like any small mammal would. They bite and maybe scratch. This instinct is inborn and thus very natural. It’s not an appropriate reaction so it’s important to tell them firmly, but kindly that “We do not bite” or “Ouch, biting hurts”. Whatever phrase you come up with it’s important to stay consistent when correcting the child.

Stress: I think adults tend to forget that children feel stress too. It may be on a more basic level, but kids are very tuned into the feelings of other so that might cause them stress. Other things that may cause a child to be stressed is being in an overly crowded area. Maybe their environment is too loud or too hot. All of things can cause stress for a child. Removing the child from the stressful situation will usually cure the problem.

Overly tired: Sometimes children that are overly tired will lash out by biting. They don’t know how to convey that they are tired. Or maybe they have been rubbing their eyes and yawning, but no one is paying any attention so it’s a combination between being overly tired and being unable to communicate their needs effectively. Making sure that a child like this gets plenty of rest should correct the biting.

Doesn’t like something: Some children will bite when they don’t like something. This is a variation on just not being able to communicate their feelings in an appropriate manner. Teaching them to say or sign that they don’t like something should clear up the biting for this reason.

Overwhelmed: Now this can be with almost anything. At a young age children are unable to express their emotions and when they can’t express them they bottle them up and get overwhelmed. Sometimes it’s related to frustrations and it’s just another form of lashing out when they don’t know what else to do.

Fear: Children will bite out of fear. Sometimes children will experience fear and not be able to express it, but it will get bottled up in them. So when they are sharing close cuddling time with their parents they will bite. Parents are often caught totally off guard because it seems so “out of the blue”, but it’s actually the child trying to let you know that they have these feelings that they don’t know what to do with and they are ready to express them. Give them a big hug and ask them what’s wrong. If the child is non-verbal they may just laugh or cry, but at least they are getting the emotion out in some way.

Every year Canadians take part in the largest environmental movement around the world. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, as people from all different nations put forth effort, no matter how big or small to help protect and save our beautiful planet. This year, we will be celebrating the 42nd Earth Day and we need your help to raise awareness!

Here are some fun, unique activities you, your family and friends can take part in this earth day.

Go on a nature hike

Find a local trail through the forest, along the bank of a river, or even through the park. A nature walk can easily turn into an exciting bird watching, animal spotting event for you and your family. Get in touch with Mother Nature.

Plant a fruit and vegetable garden

A great way to save money and create a family hobby is to plant your very own fruit and vegetable garden. You will also help reduce the pollution produced from importing food. Before you know it, there will be carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes growing in your backyard!

Make a rain barrel

Find a big barrel around your house that you could use to catch rain water in. When this barrel is full, you can use it to water your grass, flowers and garden without using the hose. If more people had rain barrels it would greatly cut down the water supply used in the summer.

Admire the earth

Can you think of a lookout point where you can see the ends of the earth? Try to find a spot like this where you can appreciate the natural beauty the planet possesses. Great picnic spots can be found near lakes, rivers, hills and parks, so that you can enjoy a meal in the great outdoors.

Go on a bike ride

Celebrate the eco friendly ways to travel by pulling out your bike and taking it for a ride! Avoid using cars, buses, or any other mode of transportation that pollutes the environment.

All of these activities either directly help save the planet or simply raise awareness of this important environmental movement. Help the world around you by changing your everyday routine……EVERYDAY!
